America’s First Brick Street

Charleston is home to the first brick street in America, a historic milestone thanks to the innovation of Mordecai Levi Sr. (M. Levi), who first tested brick paving on Summers Street in 1870. By 1873, brick streets covered an entire block, and Levi was awarded a patent for the work in 1889. Though the original bricks of Summers Street are long gone, the street remains a vibrant part of Charleston’s history.
