Eastern Cottontail

Introducing our Eastern Cottontail T-shirt! Fun fact: The Appalachian Cottontail wasn’t recognized as a distinct species until 1992. Why? Because the Appalachian and New England Cottontails are virtually identical, with only slight differences in markings, size, and range—making them nearly impossible to distinguish in the wild. The Eastern Cottontail also closely resembles the Appalachian Cottontail but can be identified by a small white spot on its forehead. Appalachian Cottontails are found in higher elevations of the Appalachian Mountains, typically 2,500 feet or higher, with a limited range from Pennsylvania to Georgia. In contrast, the Eastern Cottontail has a much broader range, found throughout Appalachia and across the Midwest, Northeast, and Southern states, even extending from Canada to South America. While the Eastern Cottontail is not endangered, the Appalachian Cottontail is at a moderate to very high risk of extinction in eight Appalachian states. Protecting their habitat is essential, and you can help by supporting conservation efforts and learning about local wildlife protection programs. This shirt celebrates the familiar face of the Eastern Cottontail—while reminding us that some species are harder to protect simply because they’re harder to tell apart.
