Viceroy

Introducing our Viceroy T-shirt! Known for their distinct orange and black markings, the Monarch and Viceroy butterflies are often mistaken for each other. The Viceroy, Kentucky's state butterfly, has a curved black line across its lower wings, while the Monarch, West Virginia's state butterfly, lacks this line and is typically larger. Both Monarch and Viceroy butterflies are found throughout Appalachia, with Monarchs using the Appalachian mountain ridges for migration to Mexico for the winter, leaving the Viceroys behind. Though they don't migrate together, they share a unique relationship through Mullerian Mimicry: they look alike and are both toxic, helping predators learn they taste bad. As important pollinators, Monarchs and Viceroys face challenges as their habitats change. You can help by uploading your photos of pollinators to databases like e-Butterfly, Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program, or Bumble Bee Watch, and by planting a pollinator-friendly garden using local resources such as your state’s planting guides or wildlife conservation tools.
